One Opening

We are sad to learn that one of our students will be moving to Utah by the end of the year. That means we will have one opening in our three-year-old (turning four) class starting Tuesday, January 3rd. Tuition is $85 a month and is due on the second Tuesday of each month. We meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-11:30. If you are interested in enrolling your student, please call Ms. Jessica.

Time Change

We had a great first week of school. The kids are full of energy and excited to learn! This week, we focused on getting to know each other and learned about our routines at school.

We have decided to change our meeting time to 9:00 (instead of 9:15). We hope this will be more convenient for you.

Here is our new time:

9:00-11:30

Remember, feel free to just come in (you don't have to knock). Also, feel free to park in my driveway. If you need anything from us, please let us know how we can create a better learning environment for your cute kids.

Thanks!

Awesome curriculum

We are excited to announce that we will be using some fabulous, hands-on curriculum from Handwriting without Tears preschool program, Get Set for School. I love this curriculum because it uses a multi-sensory approach to teach letters. It is a fun way to get kids excited to write, rather than feel intimidated or anxious.   If you would like more information about the Get Set for School curriculum we will be using, go to http://www.hwtears.com/hwt.

Learning Letters

Teaching your child the letters of his or her name is another great way to prepare him/her for school. Before students learn to write their name, they need to be able to say the letters or recognize them if they are written. My husband came up with a catchy tune to teach our daughter her name. Now she goes around the house singing her "name song." She gets excited when she sees a word in a book that has one of "her" letters.

More important than teaching the name of letters to your child is teaching the sound that the letter makes. Knowing the "sound that the letter makes" is a vital skill in learning how to read. For example, teach your child that the letter "C" makes the sound in the beginning of the word "c-c-cold."  We really try to focus on teaching the sounds that letters make, in addition to letter identification.

A great DVD that teaches the sounds that letters make is Leap Frog's Letter Factory. This educational video is available at the library. I personally like it because it has a catchy mnemonic to teach the sound of each letter of the alphabet. This is a great dvd to teach letter knowledge, one of the six early literacy skills needed to become a successful reader.
